TAKE EVERY THOUGHT CAPTIVE
A quick guide for winning the battle in your mind
“We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.” — 2 Corinthians 10:5
A stronghold is a lie we have accepted as truth. Every time we rehearse it, defend it, obey it, or build our identity around it, another brick is added to the wall. But in Christ, strongholds can come down. Feelings are real—but they are not the final measure of truth. God’s Word is. |
THE 5-STEP CAPTIVE THOUGHT PLAN
1 | RECOGNIZE |
2 | TEST |
3 | REJECT & REPENT |
4 | REPLACE |
5 | RESPOND |
WHEN THE LIE SPEAKS, ANSWER WITH TRUTH
THE LIE | THE TRUTH |
“I will always be controlled by this sin.” | “Sin shall no longer be your master.” — Romans 6:14 |
“I cannot change.” | “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” — 2 Corinthians 5:17 |
“God is finished with me.” | “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” — Romans 8:1 |
“I am unwanted.” | In Christ, I am chosen, loved, and adopted by the Father. |
“Everything is out of control.” | My life is in the hands of a faithful God. |
“My past determines my future.” | Jesus makes all things new. My identity is in Christ. |
REMEMBER: Taking a thought captive means it no longer gets to roam freely in your mind. It must bow before the truth and authority of Jesus Christ. RECOGNIZE → TEST → REJECT → REPLACE → RESPOND Some strongholds fall in a moment. Others come down one brick at a time. Every time you reject a lie, believe God’s truth, and obey Jesus—another brick falls. |
THIS WEEK: When a troubling thought comes, pause before you believe it. Ask: Is this true? What has God said? What does obedience look like right now?
Be encouraged, Mathews
