Christian life is a training school of learning how to love. God is love, and the most important truth is to love him with all our being and to love each other the same way. Jesus said on these two commandments hangs ALL the law and the prophets. (Matt 20:40). The Bible says God is love, and he wants everyone who follows him to become like him. And our life in this world is a laboratory of learning this love in His strength. Jesus says in John 13:34-35, “I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you are also to love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.”
Take for example marriage, one of the main purposes of Christian marriage is to come to an understanding that it’s not all about our life. The two shall become one meaning real Joy of marriage comes from giving our life away to another, being unselfish, serving and loving each other sacrificially. So, for all those married people out there, remember God uses your relationship to your spouse as the number one tool to build your Christ-like character of love. Everyday God throws on your lap hundreds of opportunities to think about the other person, however flawed he/she is instead of yourself. Now if you’re not married, God can and will use other people to build your Christlikeness.
God wants us to realize that life is not about us. It’s not about our pleasures, our preferences, and our priorities but about loving God and loving people God put in our life. Romans 12:10 reminds us to ‘be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves’. In fact, real Christian joy comes in giving away our life, being unselfish, serving and sacrificially loving. History has taught us that when marriages have been strong, when parenthood has been strong, when brotherly and sisterly love has been strong, when loving people God put in our lives have been strong, nations have been strong. On the reverse, when the above-mentioned things are weakened, cultures decline, and evil prevails.
