Dear Church,

Psalm 23:1 reads: “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.”  This is one of those verses that we can spend a lifetime reflecting on. In ancient Israel, shepherds were responsible for the well-being of their sheep, leading them to good pastures, protecting them from danger, and tending to their needs.  By calling the Lord his shepherd, David is acknowledging God’s personal care, guidance, and protection in his life.

“I lack nothing” means, “I am not in charge; I am under the care of someone who, in His love, is completely responsible for my well-being—leading me to good pastures, protecting me from danger, and ensuring I am fed, nurtured, and loved, even in my disobedience.”  The Lord is my Shepherd also means, “I’ve surrendered my kingdom—my control of my life and circumstances—to the kingdom of God. I am living the ‘with-God’ life.”  In this Psalm, David is expressing his contentment and trust in God’s sufficiency. It reflects a deep, personal relationship with God, where the believer can rest assured that they are fully cared for by Him.

Because of God, a life without lack is available to us all. Are we ready to surrender everything to Him and embrace this life?

Be Encouraged,
Mathews
